A History Of Style: Stephen Burrows

Stephen Burrows is considered the first African American fashion designer to achieve international success.

His mark on the fashion world dates back to 1969 when he began making his ready to wear collection. By the next year he was hired by Bendel’s president Geraldine Stutz and opened a boutique called “Stephen Burrows World.” His signature look was the close fit and slim silhouette using wool and rayon jersey.

In 1972, he created a lovely two-piece wrapped dress of matte jersey. It’s paired with orange red stockings and shoes.

His black and grey oversized top with an off the shoulder look is very comfortable. It has half sleeves and beige pant with black small gloves and simple shoes.

His simple chic black striped sleeveless maxi dress is elegant and easy to wear with a V-neckline that plunges paired with strapped shoes.

Burrows’ striped red and black high waist jumpsuit looks cool with a black and white coat. It provides unique patterns and an urban elegance that makes everyone take a second look. It’s paired with little black gloves and boots.

An over sized jacket dress with fringe simply placed on the bottom looks amazing on the right person. It can be worn with a skull cap and leotards.

Another excellent choice among one of Burrows collections is the tan and black dress that gathers at the knee, giving an appearance of a paper sack. It has long sleeves and is paired with leopard print boots.

In 2002, Vogue named the Burrows boutique the party of the year, and he received a star on the 7th Avenue Fashion Walk of Fame. Burrows founded a collection sold globally at Target stores and he has created designs worn b celebrities including Cher, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, and Taylor Swift.

Burrows even designed a collection for Barbie –the Pazette Barbie doll. It is definitely out of the ordinary and quite beautiful.

Stephen Burrows continues to make his statement on the fashion world with his incredible collection spanning several decades. He is currently working on a number of collections for films.
